Jayden Halbgewachs enters the final weekend of the regular season sitting three goals away from breaking the Moose Jaw Warriors' single-season goal record.

The record has been the talk of the city for the past week and Halbgewachs said it's hard not to focus on it going into the Warriors' two games against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

“It's not easy to not talk about it right now, it seems like that's what everyone is talking about, so for me, it's trying to stay focused because it's been pretty crazy with everything on social media,” he said. “That's something that I have to battle through and I want to make it happen, you come two games away from breaking that record, I can't see how anyone wouldn't want to.”

The Warriors overage forward sits at 68 goals through 70 games this season. The franchise record of 70 is held by Blair Atcheynum and has stood since 1988-89.

Halbgewachs is also looking to become the first player in the WHL to hit the 70-goal mark in almost 20 years.

During Tuesday's 2-1 shootout win over Prince Albert for the Warriors at Mosaic Place, you could hear the crowd hold their breath every time that Halbgewachs touched the puck.

“It's exciting, the fans are excited, which makes it that much better, so everyone is rooting for it and it's just a matter of bearing down and doing it,” said Halbgewachs.

Halbgewachs will also be looking to secure the WHL scoring title this weekend as he enters these two games sitting one point ahead of Swift Current forward Glenn Gawdin with 125 points.

The Warriors accomplished a big team goal on Tuesday when they locked up their first Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as regular season champions.

Despite having first place locked up, don't expect the Warriors to take their foot off the gas too much over the final weekend of the regular season.

“It's pretty cool for us to finish first in the league, but we've still got a long ways to go and we really want to end our season off hot going into playoffs, so these two games are still really important for us,” said Warriors captain Brett Howden.

After having some up-and-down moments in the month of February, the Warriors have seemed to turn the corner with their play over the last two weeks.

They've won three straight games going into the season-ending showdown with the Wheat Kings.

“We're on the upswing, we've been playing pretty good lately, these last couple of weeks have been some of our best games, so we've just got to keep doing what we've been doing,” said Howden. “We're a little bit short on bodies right now, but we're still playing well and that makes guys play even harder when you're missing some key players, so we'll keep going hard and when we get those guys back, we'll be even stronger.”

The Warriors' back-end has taken a beating over the past few games with four key players leaving games.

Brandon Schuldhaus and Dmitri Zaitsev have both been out of the lineup since last Saturday's meeting with Swift Current, while Jett Woo left Tuesday's game in the first period and didn't return. Kale Clague remained on the bench, but didn't hit the ice after limping off the ice in the third period on Tuesday.

Those injuries have led to the Warriors calling up 16-year-old defencemen Matthew Sanders and Drae Gardiner to finish the regular season with the team.

Sanders has played a lot of minutes over the past few games and held his own.

“So far it's been really good, I'm having a lot of fun and the older guys have been really good taking me in and showing me the ropes,” said Sanders. “This team has all the skill in the world and we have a great chance of really going somewhere and doing something special, so I'm really excited.”

The Calgary product posted three goals and 15 points in 35 games with the Calgary Buffaloes in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League this season.

He said he's enjoyed being thrown right into the fire with the Warriors over the past week. “It was an adjustment, but you have to learn to adapt quickly,” Sanders said. “It's a good opportunity for me to show what I can do and I'm having a lot of fun doing it.

“I've handled things pretty well, when we got down to four D (on Tuesday) I knew I had to step up and play my game, and I felt like I did that and did well at it.”
