The Peacock Toilers won three sets to one over the defending city champion Vanier Spirits to win the city senior high school girls volleyball crown for the first time in five years.

The Toilers won three sets to one (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) at a raucus Sask Polytechnic gym.

Peacock senior Olivia Mowchenko was excited to see her team win.

“We didn’t know going into it at all what the game would be like because it’s been a battle all season,” she said. “The first time we played them it was a really close game, right to the fifth set… It was a really good game and I’m really happy that the score was close and it was fun.”

Vanier had provincial team member Paige Beausoleil playing well at left side, and Bryn Giddings playing well as well but couldn’t sustain momentum when Peacock was able to put players on her kill attempts.

Toilers head coach Lorne Polupski said that it was a great Vanier team that the Toilers were up against.

“Anytime you win a gold, and we’ve got two golds this week already, it’s amazing,” he said, referring to the win at regionals over the weekend. “Our Grade 12s are playing great. I’ve got a Grade 9 tonight (Makena Simmons) and two Grade 10s (Summer Okerstrom and Brooklyn Roney). They were amazing. The whole team played amazing.”

Mowchenko said she’s looking forward to playing the Spirits again at provincials this weekend in Fort Qu’Appelle.

“We can’t go into provincials overconfident,” she said. “I think we went into this game a little overconfident because we beat them at regionals. The first couple of points we were super nervous and they were able to get on us. Fortunately we were able to get ourselves back into the game. But we definitely have to push this game behind us now and go into provincials like it’s a new start.

Both teams will be in provincials this weekend and will play against each other in the round robin. Also in their pool are Meadow Lake, Yorkton Sacred Heart and Fort Qu’appelle. The playoff round will start Saturday afternoon.
