The Vanier Spirits and Vikings were both able to pick up wins during Monday’s High School Junior Basketball League action around the city.

The girls game went right down to the wire with the Spirits squeaking out a 35-33 win over the Peacock Toilers. 

Peacock held a 10-8 lead after the first quarter before Vanier was able to climb in front 22-20 by halftime.  The Toilers found their way back into the lead in the third quarter going up 29-25 heading into the final frame.

The game featured a balanced attack from Vanier with Alexis Jones leading the way with eight points, as well as Kirah Brown, Jaycee Ludke, Megan Auger, Madelyn Delmage and Taylor Zaremba chipping in with four points each.

Peacock’s Jaycee Richards had a game-high 15 points in the loss.

Vanier’s boys withstood an attack from the Craik Eagles on Monday night and came away with a 60-46 win.

The Vikings were led by McFarlin Tolentino, who scored nine points in the win, while Xyrus Smith added seven points of his own.

It was a two-headed attack in the loss for Craik as they got 19 points from Evan Ehman and 13 from Walker Boyd.

They battled through a tight first half, but the Central Cyclones were able to pull away late against the Conerstone/Riverview Royals in Junior Girls Basketball on Monday night.

The Cyclones ended up with a 53-31 win over the Royals, led by Rae Whitehead and Kasey Gardner, who each scored 12 points for Central.

Awar Odhiang was the Royals top scorer, pouring in 12 points in the loss.

The Cornerstone Falcons went out to Caronport on Monday night and picked up a 58-44 win over the Cougars in Junior Boys Basketball action.

The Falcons held a big 32-19 lead over the Cougars at halftime, but Caronport made it close in the second half.

Jesse Ukrainetz did all he could to get Caronport in the game, scoring 22 points, but it wasn’t enough in the loss.  Cornerstone was led by Luke Dombowsky with 17 points and Kaleb Seida with 16.
