As the holidays approach the crew down at the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank are asking for residents to help with filling the ever growing number of food hampers they pass out to those in need.

Local food drives pick up in the late fall and early winter, but Assistant Manager at the food bank Deann Little said they're getting low on quite a few items.

"Canned fruit, pasta or rice, any canned meat or turkeys especially with Thanksgiving coming," explained Little. "Fresh vegetables, we always do take that as well, vegetables and fruit, a lot of people don't realize we do take fresh items."

They also need things like canned soup as it is a staple in most food hampers and school snacks such as juice boxes and granola bars, because a large number of recipients are children.

Little noted that just about 50% of the people signing up for hampers are children, and she noted how easy it is to register.

"All we need for anyone to access our services is a health card for children, a health card or photo identification for adults in the house hold and a piece of mail."

The food bank currently has construction taking place around the intersection of their building, but the loading dock in the back alley is still accessible for people wanting to drop off donations.
