The Five Hills Health Region has been given some additional funding aimed at helping them hit their target for day surgeries this year.

$1 million has been provided to Five Hills from the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative to expand surgical capacity at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Executive Director of Clinical Services Laurie Albinet believes the extra funding will allow them to address some of the areas that need attention.

"It's a very exciting initiative. When the Patient First Survey went out, it was identified that access to surgery was a challenge for many of our people out in the community and so we're working hard to improve that access to surgery and this is definitely going to help us do that."

Over 3900 day surgeries are performed at the Union Hospital per year and with this extra funding, they're hoping to increase that to 4100. Albinet adds that they have some flexibility on how to use the money, saying they will be purchasing additional equipment as well as performing a review on how they can enhance their surgical service.
