Alex Carleton was named Moose Jaw’s 2023 Citizen of the Year during a ceremony Tuesday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

Carleton was honoured for his work on the board of Tourism Moose Jaw, the Downtown Moose Jaw Association and the Kinsmen Club.

“It’s fantastic. It’s an honour and there’s just a lot of great people in this city doing a lot of fantastic things and volunteering a lot of hours. I’m proud to be just another one of those people,” Carleton said of the award.

Carleton spearheaded several fundraisers within the community through his business. He’s also advocated for the beautification of downtown through projects like commissioning local artists to paint benches and garbage cans downtown.

“Well, I’ve lived here my whole life and I just want to see our city prosper and I want to see people excited to come to our city. The art project downtown is something the downtown association is doing as well as the car show and the wonderful things that Kinsmen do and Tourism Moose Jaw and the different things I’m involved in, I’m just proud to be a part of and proud to do my part,” he said.

Carleton has also given back by donating to the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank and providing financial support for multiple sports teams in the community.

Carleton explained why volunteering and giving back to the community is so important to him.

“I enjoy helping people number one and number two is I have a business downtown and I have this thing called Shop Local. Well, being local, I think there’s a responsibility and for me, that’s giving back as much as I can,” he said.

Also nominated for the award were Aaron Ruston, Dianne and Larry Hellings, Jared Mathieson and TaraLynn Park.

The 2023 Moose Jaw Citizen of the Year award was presented by the Moose Jaw Chamber of Commerce, CAE and Golden West Radio.
