Do you have time to spare to volunteer? The City of Moose Jaw is looking for volunteers to sit on several of its boards and committees.

The Board of Revision is looking for new members. These are paid positions for a two-year term. The Board of Revision deals with appeals during the assessment process.

“There is a shortage of people available to hear assessment appeals and it would certainly be helpful if there are people in the community that are interested in pursuing that on a very part-time basis the Board of Revision would be interested in hearing from,” said city clerk/solicitor Myron Gulka-Tiechko during last week’s city council meeting.

The Youth Advisory Committee, which Lyle Johnson has been instrumental in running, consists of local high school students. However, as students graduate new members are needed.

Mayor Fraser Tolmie said it is one of the committees he really enjoys working with.

“They're great kids.  Every year they come through the system and a lot of them stay in touch and you get to see where they go,” Tolmie said.

“I've been mayor for now almost six years here and you can see these kids that have graduated and gone to university and getting full-time jobs and how their lives progressed. So, it's kind of nice.”

The newly-formed Community Clean-up Committee is also in need of people to join. The committee works with other community groups and volunteers to partner with the city to keep Moose Jaw clear of litter and garbage.

Along with representatives from various other organizations in the city, the clean-up committee includes two citizens at large.

There have also been talks about residents needed to sit on the Mural Project Management Board. The board consists of a city council and several Moose Jaw residents. This board manages, controls and supervises the murals depicting the city’s early history painted throughout Moose Jaw.

Tolmie said these are just a few of the boards and committees that need members right now.

“It's one of the things that I've found with a lot of organizations, not just with the city, but a lot of community boards that we really need volunteers to keep those organizations going and to be able to do good work for the community,” Tolmie said.
