Opening Day is just over a week away for the Moose Jaw Miller Express and the team's roster continues to take shape with Tuesday’s announcement of three position players making their way to the Friendly City this summer.

Outfielders Robbie McKinney and Travis Able, along with shortstop/pitcher Joshmar Doran are coming off strong springs at their respective schools and the Millers are hoping they can carry that play over to the Western Major Baseball League.

McKinney (OF, 6-foot, 180 pounds) played his season with Davis and Elkins College. The Ashville, Ohio product posted seven doubles, three triples, 26 RBI and a .313 batting average in 44 games this spring.

“He had a really good freshman year last year and had a pretty outstanding sophomore year this year,” said Millers Head Coach Michael Hunt. “He came highly recommended from his coach and a former player that we had last year that’s played with him, so we’re really happy to have him here and hope he can recreate his spring this summer.”

Much like McKinney, Able (OF, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds) is coming off a great spring with Central Missouri. In 37 games, he had six doubles, three triples, one home run, 26 RBI and a .350 average.

“He had a slow start this spring and then really poured it on over the last half of the season,” said Hunt. “He’s been a stalwart on the top of Central Missouri’s roster for a long time.”

Both McKinney and Able are centerfielders and Hunt added that having two guys of that skill at that position will really allow them to keep them fresh and gives them options throughout the season.

Doran (SS, 6-foot, 155 pounds) played at Indian Hills Community College. The Curacao, Bahamas product put up one double, two home runs, 12 RBI and a .250 average in 37 games this season. He also appeared in eight games as a pitcher, throwing 18.1 innings with 11 strikeouts and 11 walks.

“It’s our first island kid, he’s from the Bahamas, he’s got a little flair at shortstop, he’s a slick fielding, good arm, middle infielder, as well as he can handle the bat and he can chuck it on the mound a little bit, so we’ll be able to get a lot of different looks out of him,” said Hunt.

The players are expected to start arriving in Moose Jaw later this week and into the weekend with the 2017 season set to start next Thursday in Swift Current. The first home game of the year is next Friday when the Millers host the Weyburn Beavers at Ross Wells Park, first pitch is at 7 p.m.
