The Moose Jaw Mustangs Lacrosse Association held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre to reflect on the 2022-2023 box lacrosse season.

To start, the organization returned to the Junior level in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League after a hiatus. The Mustangs also saw their highest enrollment of players ever last season.

“Probably half (of the new players) are under 13 years of age. So, it’s growing and it’s building and we’re pretty excited to have the Rush coming on Nov. 25 for their preseason game,” said Mustangs president Bridget Andrews.

Moose Jaw played host to the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League’s (SSLL) playoffs and the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Association (SLA) provincials. Moose Jaw’s U17 team would come away with a provincial title.

In previous years, the Mustangs would attend the SLA awards. This past year, the Mustangs decided to hold their first-ever awards ceremony instead of attending the provincial awards.

“There were 300 people in attendance and the kids had an absolute blast. It was great to see so many people out and supporting our organization,” Andrews said.

With more players picking up the lacrosse stick, the Mustangs are feeling some growing pains moving forward.

One of the recurring themes throughout the AGM was the need for a dedicated facility for lacrosse.

Andrews said, that with more and more players from Moose Jaw playing A-League box lacrosse, it is hard for them to be competitive when they are competing for arena time with hockey during the winter.

“When you’re competing against Ontario and B.C., which are the frontrunners, it’s very difficult to get our kids to that next level because we don’t have the arena time here,” Andrews said.

She added that the growing numbers also mean a need for more coaches and to get coaches certified.
