A baby formula sold across Canada has been recalled for possible bacteria contamination.

Nestlé issued a voluntary recall for its Good Start Soothe infant formula on Saturday, over concern about Cronobacter sakazakii potentially being present.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation and is verifying that products are removed from the marketplace.

According to CFIA, food with the bacteria may not look or smell contaminated but can in rare cases cause serious or fatal infections.

"Cronobacter sakazakii can cause rare bloodstream and central nervous system infections," the federal government stated in their recall warning on their website, "And has been associated with severe intestinal infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis), especially in newborns."

Folks are advised to throw out or return the recalled product to where they bought it from, and to contact their physician if they suspect illness in their infants related to consuming the formula.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
