The Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) received funding from the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) for a Ford Explorer for the Police and Crisis Team (PACT) in 2020.

Delays in the tendering and equipping process attributed in part to the pandemic meant that the cost of materials, parts, and labour needed to equip the vehicle rose beyond the original funding.

“Due to some supply chain demands, there was a bit of a delay in the vehicle arriving and becoming outfitted,” explained Deputy Chief Rick Johns.

The Moose Jaw Police Service requested that the board transfer $11,416 from the Equipment Reserve Control Account to cover the cost increase.

“Still a bargain, considering it’s costing us $11,000 and the vehicle itself is funded by the SHA,” said Johns.

“This is a fully equipped police vehicle assigned to our PACT unit with equipment that they can utilize not only for our reports but SHA reports, and basically properly address mental health and addictions issues in the street using a vehicle dedicated to it."

Vehicle modifications for the Ford Explorer include molded plastic seats for biohazard cleanup, partitions and window bars, and various electronics including lights, a laptop, and camera.

The request was moved by Commissioner Nicole Swanson and seconded by Commissioner Clive Tolley.
