You may have noticed students at various schools around the city, dressed creatively and covered with socks on Tuesday.

It was World Down Syndrome Day - also known as "Lots of Socks" day - a way to raise awareness for Down Syndrome.

St. Mary School was one of the Moose Jaw schools participating.

"Every sock is unique, just like every person in the world is unique," said Luka Pollock, a student in the Grade 4/5 class, who summed up the idea behind "Lots of Socks Day."

"I think it's very important to learn about all different people and causes," said teacher Jillian Lawson, who encouraged her students to dress in the spirit of the day. "It's just like teaching about Terry Fox, the military, or other things - it's important because it's life."

Lawson said her students were the most intrigiued about learning the science behind down syndrome and almost every single one of her students raised their hands when asked if they knew someone with Down Syndrome.
