Sawyer Buettner runs into the end zone during the SHSAA 3A Provincial Final at Mosaic Stadium in November.

Moose Jaw's Sawyer Buettner is getting the chance of a lifetime next month as he's been invited to take part in the 2015 International Bowl with Football Canada's under-18 team.

The game will pit Canada against the United States at AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, in Arlington, Texas.

“Playing in a large venue like that will be pretty awesome and just the level of competition I'm sure will be great and playing with the top guys in Canada will be awesome too, so I'm pretty excited about,” said Buettner.

The Peacock Collegiate quarterback was selected to the team in August after putting together a stellar performance at the 2014 Football Canada Cup in Saskatoon. He was named a tournament MVP.

The team was finalized earlier this month with Buettner finding out who his final teammates will, including Caronport's Payton Hall, who will be playing in the International Bowl for the second straight year.

“Now that it's finally getting closer, starting to get more excited,” said Buettner. “A little nervous, but more excitement now that it's getting closer.”

The game will be played with American football rules, meaning four downs and a 100-yard field. That will be a first for Buettner, but something that he's looking forward to taking a crack at.

“It will be fun mixing it up and playing a different style of football,” said Buettner. “It's not too different from our game, but there's definitely some differences that are an advantage and disadvantage, but it will just be fun to play the American style.”

The high school football season ended in Saskatchewan in early November, meaning when the International Bowl happens, it will have been over two months since Buettner has played a competitive game of football.

He said he's not too worried about that and will be putting in some work before hand to make sure he's sharp.

“I've been throwing and working out and doing stuff like that,” he said. “Over the next couple weeks, I'll try to do a lot more throwing with some guys from my school and just try to get ready for Dallas.”

After a record-setting high school football career, Buettner is on the radar of many CIS schools, but he's hoping to put himself on the map for even more schools with a strong performance in the game.

“To play high level football and to win the International Bowl is the main goal and all the other stuff is just secondary,” said Buettner. “But, that's part of going down there too, so I'm looking forward to maybe opening people's eyes a bit more too.”

Buettner is one of two quarterbacks named to the roster. He said he doesn't know much about the plans for the game, but is going there to compete and win the game.

“The goal is always to get the win and have a good experience,” he said. “I don't really know what to expect at all, so I don't have too high of standards or anything like that, but I expect myself to perform.

“This summer was awesome playing some of the top guys from Saskatchewan, but to play with some of the top guys in Canada will be fun, so hopefully that can bring out the best in me.”

Football Canada rolled to a 54-9 rout of the Americans in last year's International Bowl, so the US will no doubt be looking for payback this time around.

The 2015 International Bowl will be held on Jan. 30 at AT&T Stadium.
