The Moose Jaw Colts had their game a little bit closer than they would have liked, but they began their season the way they've ended the last nine - with a win.

The Colts won 7-4 over the Heat in the season opener for the Moose Jaw Ladies Fastball League Monday night.

Centrefielder Ceanna Bruce hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to provide some insurance.

“It was definitely a really good first game,” Bruce said. “Obviously we made some errors usually we don’t make. For having such a length without playing, it was really good. We hit the ball and we made some plays out on the field as well.”

Clutch two-out hitting by Bailey Mackie and Erin Tribier with two out drove home some runs for the Heat in the third inning brought them to within 5-3. A Shayla Freeman single drove home another in the sixth to bring them to within one of the nine-time defending champion Colts.

Colts starting pitcher Mikayla Swallow ran out of gas in the middle innings, but Kim Neithercut came on in relief to all but shut the door on the Heat. Swallow and Neithercut combined for seven strikeouts.

Bruce’s two-run double in the sixth provided some much-needed insurance.

This season lasts four weeks only.

In the evening's other game, the Hustlers defeated Assiniboia 10-1.

Nicole Ansell drove home three runs and Adrianna Phillips struck out seven on the mound for the Hustlers.

Next action in the league will be the Ice taking on the Heat Wednesday night. The Colts take on Assiniboia Thursday while the Ice face the Hustlers.
