The Skylar Ackerman rink out of Moose Jaw had a strong showing on their home ice this weekend, as they won the women’s side of the Winter Games Prep Spiel.

Ackerman knocked off Weyburn’s Emily Haupstein, 8-2, in the final on Sunday at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.

“It was definitely our best game all weekend, we improved with each and every game and that one was really good for us,” said Ackerman after the win.

The local team, which also features third Madison Johnson, second Chantel Hoag and lead Samantha McLaren, went undefeated throughout the weekend, beating Haupstein in the ‘A’ event final on Saturday night and then knocked off Regina’s Karla Friesen in the semifinal on Sunday.

The success that they’d had throughout the weekend led to a confident group heading into Sunday’s final. “We were really relaxed and we knew the ice well,” said Ackerman.

After a blank in the first end, Ackerman was able to steal two in the second for an early 2-0 lead.

Haupstein scores a single in the third, but Ackerman nailed her takeout attempt on her last shot in the fourth to score four and take control with a 6-2 lead.

After a steal of one in the fifth, Ackerman added another one in the sixth to finish off the win.

The win is big as the teams were battling to accumulate points for the chance to represent Saskatchewan at the Canada Winter Games next year.

“With that win we got quite a few points and we’ll likely make the high performance team, which is huge,” said Ackerman.
