The Moose Jaw Canucks are showing that they won’t go down without a fight this season.

The local Midget AA team didn’t have their ‘A’ game again on Tuesday night, committing seven errors, but they feature enough offensive firepower to stay in the game and ended up just short in a 10-9 loss to the Regina White Sox at Ross Wells Park.

The loss drops Moose Jaw’s record to 14-3-1 on the year in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League.

“The last few games we’ve been battling back, we’ve made a lot of errors, but our hitting has really brought us up and that showed, but all the errors are definitely killing us right now,” said outfielder Garrick Ward after the loss.

On Saturday, the Canucks overcame an eight-run deficit in the seventh inning to win, despite committing nine errors in that game. They weren’t able to clean up the defensive side of their game on Tuesday with seven more errors costing them.

“We just need to take our time, we’re rushing all our plays and not making sure that we have the ball before we make the throw and just rushing it,” said Ward. “It can be cleaned up with hard work at practice, get back to the drawing board and see what we can do.”

The errors were the biggest issue in the game for the Canucks as they out-hit the White Sox and continued to answer any runs that Regina put on the board, but couldn’t find a way to slow them down.

“We’ve been hitting the ball year and nothing has changed that way, we put up double digit runs almost every game,” said Ward.

That offence gave the Canucks a chance to win the game in the seventh inning as they trailed 10-8 heading into the frame. They scored one run and had runners on the corners with one out, but the White Sox catcher made a spectacular diving catch on a foul ball for the second out.

Moose Jaw couldn’t bounce back.

“Credit to him, he made a nice play because we felt like we were rolling and could have won that game for sure,” said Ward.

The loss was just the third of the season for the Canucks, who were beating teams fairly easily in the first half. They’ve played in a lot tighter games over the past few weeks, but Ward said that is great experience for them.

“That’s going to help us because it’s going to teach us about what it takes in a tight game,” he said.

The Canucks will get the long weekend off before returning to Ross Wells next Tuesday to host the Lumsden Cubs.
