Do you have yard waste you need to dispose of? This Victoria Day weekend is your chance to do so free of charge.

May 18 to 20 is the City of Moose Jaw’s “Free Yard Waste Weekend”. The $10 tipping fee for disposing of all organic yard waste, including leaves, grass clippings, and branches under 1 inch in diameter will be waived over the three-day period.

The city requests that material slated for disposal to be contained in clear or orange bags.

“We know it’s a very popular weekend at the landfill, and there is a long line.” said Moose Jaw City Manager, Maryse Carmichael.

“In order to expedite the lines, if we can make sure that we have clear bags so our employees can see quickly and they’re able to direct you to the right location.”

A series of designated yard waste zones will be created at the landfill, with staff inspecting loads at the entrance and directing vehicles to said areas.

Waste may be transported in trailers behind light vehicles; however, dual-axle and commercial vehicles are not eligible for the fee waiver.

Disposal of non-organic household waste such as construction materials, furniture, mattresses and appliances will still be subject to standard landfill rates based on material and weight.

The city reminds residents that “Tarps Aren’t Optional”, citing city bylaw No. 5156, Section 23, which states that: tarps are required to secure loads and violations will be issued for loads not secured by a tarp.

“It’s about respecting the environment, respecting (our) fellow residents.” said Carmichael. “We don’t want any debris or waste flying from either your pickup truck or trailer, so make sure you tarp your load, otherwise you may get a fine.”
