The Moose Jaw Generals struck first, but they couldn’t hold on as they lost 3-1 to the Hungary Under-16 team on Tuesday in their opening game at the 37th annual Richmond International Midget AAA Tournament.

Riley Skarbon scored for Moose Jaw with 1:23 to go in the first period to open the scoring.

Team Hungary was able to tie the game up only 1:54 into the second period on a goal from Tamas Ortenszky.

Balazs Varga scored twice late in the third period to give Hungary the win. He broke up the 1-1 tie with 3:25 to go in the game and then scored with 34 seconds left to seal the victory.

Moose Jaw goalie Jake Davidson took the loss in net, while Evan Sare and Skyler Sangster picked up assists on Skarbon’s goal.

The Generals will continue the tournament on Wednesday when they face-off with the Everett Silvertips Under-18 Elite AAA team. They hit the ice at 5 p.m. at Minoru Stadium in Richmond, B.C.
