A deadline for landowners and lessees is approaching for Saskatchewan’s highway hay salvage program.

The hay salvage program aims to supply free hay to farmers, while also helping maintain visibility on the highway.

July 8th is the final day that landowners or lessees adjacent to a highway ditch can exercise their first option to cut or bale free hay.

When the deadline passes, the nearest landowner’s permission is no longer needed, and individuals can cut and bale hay first come, first serve if a mowing contractor is not mowing near the area.

Any bales have to be at least eight meters from the highway’s shoulder, and the Ministry of Highways will remove them for safety reasons as needed. Any hay bales left in highway ditches after August 8th are subject to removal by the Ministry of Highways.

You can find more information on requirements on the Government of Saskatchewan’s website here.
