A 29-year-old man was sentenced to one year behind bars for a long list of charges in Moose Jaw Provincial Court recently.

Bryson Smith pleaded guilty in a joint submission to a number of charges including breaching probation orders, assault, theft and mischief.

Smith was charged on June 13, 2023 for breach of a probation order for keeping the peace after he was caught on video smashing a window at Cranberry Collective Boutique on March 23.

On March 23, 2024, Smith was once again charged with breaching a probation order of keeping the peace.

Smith was charged with assault on April 9 after a confrontation with the victim outside the Moose Jaw Public Library in which the victim was punched once in the mouth and spit on.

Smith pleaded guilty to mischief from April 23. Crown prosecutor Rob Parker said Smith attended Willow Lodge two days after being banned from the location. Parker said Smith banged on the door for 15 to 20 minutes before going to the back and smashing a kitchen window causing $1,500 worth of damage.

Smith pleaded guilty to another charge of mischief from May 14 when he entered a residence without the owner’s permission. There was no damage done.

On May 12, Smith was charged with breaching a probation order when a 9-1-1 call came from Willow Lodge that there was a man inside the shelter yelling at staff members.

He was charged with theft on May 9 after police received a report of two hamburgers that were stolen. Smith was found close by with the food.

He was also charged with mischief and breach of probation on April 27 for throwing a tarp strap at the victim on Main Street North.

Parker said Smith has 30 days of actual time in jail for 45 days of enhanced credit, leaving him with 320 days left to serve. Parker also presented a lengthy criminal record of past offences.

Legal Aid Lawyer Suzanne Lalonde said Smith had received a nine-month sentence earlier this year and presented Gladue factors for Smith’s Indigenous background.

Judge Brian Hendrickson asked Smith if he had anything to say. Smith said he took full responsibility for his actions, apologized for the offences and said he is taking programming to turn his life around.

“Hopefully, you take advantage of some of the programming at the institution,” Hendrickson replied.

Hendrickson followed the joint submission of 365 days with 45 days of enhanced credit.
