A man facing a long list of theft and fraud-related charges is seeking to have his matter resolved.

Ryan Buckton appeared in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday via video from the Regina Correctional Centre. Legal Aid lawyer Suzanne Lalonde told the court they needed more time to find Buckton a new lawyer. She said they’ve reached out to three lawyers, two couldn’t take the case and they were still waiting for confirmation from another.

Buckton raised concerns because he wanted to start resolution talks with Crown Prosecutor Rob Parker immediately. Because Buckton is getting the assistance of a lawyer, ethically Parker cannot have resolution talks directly with him.

Another Moose Jaw Legal Aid lawyer Zack Anderson confirmed for the court and Buckton that Moose Jaw Legal Aid can at least act as a middleman for resolution talks while they find him a new lawyer.

Buckton’s case was adjourned to June 19.

Buckton is facing 33 charges including fraud, theft under $5,000, mischief, breach of conditions, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, tampering with a vehicle identification number, possession of counterfeit money, using counterfeit money, trafficking property obtained by crime, forgery, using forged documents, weapons trafficking and possession of firearms at an unauthorized place.
