Spokane, WA – The Moose Jaw Warriors’ offence erupted for a season-high 12 goals on Saturday night in Spokane.

The Warriors scored four times in the first period, added six goals in the second period and then two more in the third on their way to a 12-3 victory over the Spokane Chiefs at the Veterans Memorial Arena.

“To score on the second shift sets the tone, so it was a matter of getting on them early and they’ve got to change the way they play a little bit and we took advantage of some odd man opportunities,” Warriors associate coach Scott King said.

It’s the first time this season that the Warriors have reached double digits in goals and the team has now scored 21 goals in two games to open up their six-game trek through the U.S. Division.

Atley Calvert led the attack for Moose Jaw with a hat trick and five points to surpass 200 points in his Western Hockey League career.

“It’s just a matter of work and effort is what [Atley] does,” King said. “He doesn’t cheat the game, he plays it the right way and he gets rewarded for it, so he’s a guy that as a 20-year-old you lean on in hard moments to make the right play and he usually does.”

Pavel McKenzie and Lynden Lakovic had two goals and three points each, while Rilen Kovacevic added four assists in the win.

“We had good sticks and that generated some chances the other way and we did a good job on the wall, they were pressing down and we managed to get pucks inside to our centremen,” King said.

The Warriors started their attack quickly with Lakovic scoring his 14th of the season just 55 seconds into the game.

Brayden Schuurman followed that up only 1:22 later, scoring his 17th of the season to put Moose Jaw in front 2-0.

The Warriors went in front by three when Pavel McKenzie dangled in and went top shelf for his 12th of the season.

That was followed up by Atley Calvert scoring his 39th of the season on a breakaway only 46 seconds later to make it 4-0 after one.

Denton Mateychuk loaded up a big slap shot to score his 14th of the season just 59 seconds into the second period, extending the Warriors’ lead to 5-0.

With 4:19 gone in the second, Martin Rysavy buried his 22nd on the year to make it a six-goal lead and Lakovic followed that up with his second of the game only 3:54 later.

Spokane broke up the onslaught when Connor Roulette scored a power play goal just past the midway point of the second.

The Warriors answered right back with a shorthanded goal from Calvert, his second of the night, just over two minutes later.

Then, Matthew Savoie came out of the penalty box and scored his 21st of the season to make it 9-1.

The Chiefs got one back when Chase Harrington scored and then the Warriors made it 10 goals with just 13 seconds left in the frame when McKenzied picked up his second of the night.

Berkly Catton scored a power play goal for the Chiefs midway through the third period, but the Warriros answered back with Calvert finishing off his hat trick.

Jagger Firkus finished off the scoring, potting his 45th of the season with 2:17 to go. The goal was Firkus’ 100th point of the season, becoming the 20th player in Warriors’ history to hit the century mark.

The Warriors were on the attack throughout the game, outshooting the Chiefs, 52-22, in the win. Moose Jaw finished 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill.

“We did a good job defensively with our defencemen having good gaps and being tight and I thought our forwards got above the play and tracked back hard through the middle,” King said.

With the win, the Warriors move into sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Medicine Hat and four points clear of Swift Current.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday when their U.S. Division road trip continues in Portland against the division-leading Winterhawks.
