Only a handful of young curlers from across Canada were chosen for a scholarship for post-secondary students.

For The Love Of Curling is offered to curlers who are in post secondary and also involved in their community as volunteers, and Chamberlain's Skyler Ackerman was one of those chosen.

Ackerman, formerly of the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre, is preparing for life as a student at the University of Saskatchewan.

“Well it sure helps a lot financially, just with going to university it’s an expensive undertaking,” she said. “And anything helps. And just the overall recognition of the scholarship. It’s a real honour to be recognized for my accomplishments in curling, in the classroom and with volunteering. It’s really exciting for me.”

Ackerman is in select company: there were only ten chosen in the For The Love Of Curling Scholarship.

Ackerman was the 2018 provincial U18 champion and made it to the C final of last year’s U18 championship.

Being at the U of S will present a different challenge for Ackerman, who has curled at a high level for a number of years through the junior ranks.

“It’ll be a new adventure,” she said. “We’ve got a pretty busy schedule planned for my team. We’re planning to make it to the Canadian Juniors this winter, and that’ll be in B.C., and along with the money I receive from the scholarship, half of it goes toward my curling, so that not only helps me but helps my team as well.”

As a result of her moving, she'll be curling out of Saskatoon's Nutana Curling Club. She’ll be curlign with Emily Haupstein, Abbey Johnson and Taylor Stremick.
